Olympians to Join Mayor Peter Corroon to Proclaim Olympic Day and Citywide Celebration

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon will announce that June 24 will be celebrated citywide as Olympic Day at a special event featuring 2002 Olympic Gold Medalist Derek Parra, and members of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Speed Skating Team at the Utah Olympic Oval on Thursday, June 24, 2010.

Mayor Corroon and the Olympians will unveil a new commemorative banner honoring the Vancouver 2010 Olympians. Following the banner unveiling there will be an autograph session with current 2010 Olympic team athletes, a free public skate (skate rental included), and a free pizza party. Festivities will begin at 3:00 pm with the Mayor’s proclamation, and free public skate from 4:00 – 6:30

Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.

Parra will speak on behalf of US Speedskating Olympians, and will speak about the excitement of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, where US Speedskaters won ten medals in long and short track competition, contributing to the unprecedented 37 medals won by Team USA – the greatest medals result by any nation competing at an Olympic Winter Games.

“We look forward to celebrating Olympic Day here in Utah, home to the 2002 Olympic Legacy venues including the Utah Olympic Oval and home to US Speedskating. We are thankful for the support of our Utah-based fans and look forward to sharing the sport of speedskating with the next generation of Utah’s Olympians.”
